One Month in Pohang

July 19th marks our 1 month in Pohang. Oh, how the time flies! This is going to be our first official post on our blog too - how exciting!

First, a quick update on our lives since we've been off the map for sometime now. We've been very busy with settling into our new apartment and school schedules. Also I currently am substituting for Kindergarten at the other SLP Pohang branch in the mornings before my evening classes. So it's definitely been a hectic month.

Perhaps we should tell you about our journey to Pohang next. After staying up all Friday night at a noraebong with our friends we headed to the Ottawa MacDonald-Cartier Airport for our early morning flight (4h30 EST). Now I've flown home quite often and this was one of the messiest Air Canada check-ins I've had in a long time. Our luggage tags wouldn't print and the tellers were not helpful at all, which really cut into spending time with our families before we went through security.

Once the rushed goodbyes were said we boarded our short flight to Pearson Airport. This is when we got even more played by technology: the immigration booths sent us to the wrong lines resulting in us waiting in unnecessarily long lines.

Anyways, the rest of the trip resulted in us doing a lot of running to board our flights since our recruiter booked them so close to each other. Pearson to LAX, which is a huuuge airport (I had trouble finding our terminal) and then LAX to Incheon.

I can't quite remember how long the flight to South Korea was especially because we slept for most of it but awoke to some delicious bibimbap. One of the best airplane meals I've eaten! Oh, but in classic me fashion I got super motion sick on the plane an hour before we landed... After bracing myself for a 5 hour ride to Pohang we hopped on our bus to stay at our Director's house.

I did some complicated maths and we travelled for around 30+ hours, having gotten to our Director's at 12h15 EST Saturday (01h15 KST Monday morning).

We stayed at our Director's for almost 1 week and eating delicious Korean food for lunch. Here's a funny little anecdote for you: We had no clue how to turn the hot water on for her shower and would take cold showers just about everyday. What a way to wake up!

Stay tuned for the next post about our teaching lives!

Julia~
